Gemologists generally require a combination of instructions and on the job experience.
There are some other important skills that are needed to become a gemologist are...you
need to be familiar with all types of rocks, diamonds, and gems, and all
the different colors of them. Another important skills that I will
need to grow in to become a good gemologist
is mostly in “diamond facing you need to learn all the different types of cutting.
Some main types of diamond faceting are Brilliant cut, pendeloque cut, mixed cut,
there are many more but those three are the main ones.”(Cally Halls,23) If you are working as a
salespreson you need to be good with people
and know what you are talking about. If you are working in the other end of gemology
where you cut shine or dig up the gems and diamonds then you need to be good with you
hands.
Some important equipment that mostly all gemologist use includes... a 10X Loupe, Microscope, Refractometer , SG Scale, Dichroscope, Polariscope, Spectroscope, Lighting , Gem Cleaning Cloth, Tweezers, Immersion Dishes, Sorting Tray for Grading, Calipers for Grading, Scale for Grading, UV Lamp , Chelsea Filter ,and a Diamond Tester .
